Topic 3, Cultural Appropriation in Fashion.

On my last post, I wrote about Cultural Appropriation on Beauty. In this post, I will write about the cultural appropriation in Fashion Industry. The most popular serious case are the headdresses from Native American. As I mentioned on one of my previous post, One of the famous example is Victoria's Secret using Native American headdresses in one of their fashion show.

Victoria's Secret apologized after being accused for being cultural appropriation by using headdresses.

Bringing back to the Native American headdress. When we thought of headdress, the first image that pop out in our mind is a warbonnet with full eagle's feathers like Red Indian we saw on TV but in fact most of the Native American did not uses this kind of warbonnet. The first Native American tribes who uses this kind of head pieces was The Sioux, warbonnet is for the brave and powerful among the tribe and each feathers was added when someone in the tribe committed a brave act, the person could be the chief, the warrior or anyone that got important role in the tribe. In addition, after the warrior earn his first feather, he will be seen as an adults from the tribe and before he receive the honor, he needs to prepare for few days of fasting and meditation.

Other than that, warbonnet only wore by men. Even though there are female chiefs but they never wear headdresses. Apart from this, instead of wearing warbonnet headdress, they wore roach headdress to the battlefield and save their feather headdress for special occasion.

During my research, I found some interesting videos was talking about Native American's history and misconceptions, although one of the video was not connected to the essay topic but I felt it was really interesting so I just want to share it out. Here is the videos:
